Top English youngsters are now better than Germany's finest, says Dortmund chief. England have overtaken Germany on and off the pitch at youth level, according to Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc.
The perception of English youngsters has been transformed across the world thanks to the success of our age-group sides at international level. And Zorc believes that the Three Lions’ kids – and academy set-ups over here – are better than those in Germany.
Zorc, whose Dortmund side face Tottenham in a Champions League last 16 first leg at Wembley on Wednesday, said: “You can see it in the results. The English teams are reaching more Under-17, Under-19 finals compared to the German ones. It seems that they overtook us.”
Dortmund are benefiting from the talents of one of England’s best starlets in Jadon Sancho, who they signed from Manchester City in 2017.
The winger, 18, was part of the squad that won the U17 World Cup in 2017, just one of the recent international triumphs which put English kids on the map and made them such highly-wanted players, especially in Germany.
Sancho’s old U17 team-mate, Arsenal ’s Emile Smith Rowe joined him in the Bundesliga last month with a loan switch to RB Leipzig.
Two other Young Lions, Chelsea ’s Callum Hudson-Odoi – a £35million target for Bayern Munich – and Liverpool ’s Rhian Brewster, have both been trailed by German top-flight clubs, too.
And Sancho’s best mate, Reiss Nelson, is on loan at Hoffenheim from Arsenal, while Everton's Ademola Lookman, who had a loan spell at Leipzig last season, and Reece Oxford, now at Augsburg, have also been part of the exodus.
Zorc added: “Let’s go back 10 years. There was a time that English clubs signed German players.
“There was a lot of talk here, 'It’s all about money, too early for them to go to England.' But now we have the feeling that, 'Yeah, the education and development of players in the English academies is quite good, to be honest.'
“When you see these youth academies, for example Man City, it’s much higher than German standards.
“I just read a figure of Man City — they’ve sold young players for more than £150million within the last five years.”
