The hosts were in front when a terrific Mat Targett delivery beat Laurent Koscielny at the near post for Danny Ings to head home.
Arsenal found themselves level just before the half-hour mark through Henrikh Mkhitaryan's header.
Ings' looping header made it 2-1 before Arsenal once again levelled eight minutes into the second half.
Substitute Alexandre Lacazette dispossessed the home defence on the edge of their own area before laying off to Mkhitaryan to let fly, whose effort took a huge deflection past a wrong-footed Alex McCarthy.
But when sub Mesut Ozil lost the ball in midfield a Shane Long cross wasn't dealt with by Bernd Leno - and Charlie Austin scored the simplest of headers.
