Ian Wright tells Unai Emery who to pick at right-back instead of Stephan Lichtsteiner. Former Arsenal forward Ian Wright says Unai Emery got his team selection wrong in the 3-1 defeat at Manchester City , but has backed the Gunners boss to come good eventually.
Summer signing Stephan Lichtsteiner, playing at right-back, was seemingly targeted by City throughout the game, with all three of Sergio Aguero's goals coming via crosses in from the left.
And Wright says it would have been a better option to use Shkodran Mustafi there, adding that he'd also liked to have seen Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil in the team.
"Why should Arsenal fans be optimistic? Because they’ve got a manager who’s not afraid to make decisions," Wright told BBC Radio Five Live .
"He’s making a decision at the moment with a star player (Ozil) he’s not playing.
"He played Sead Kolasinac on the left side of midfield instead of the highest-paid player in the history of our club and the most talented player.
"That’s a worry because you need chances, you need creativity.
"Aaron Ramsey’s always going to come on and put in a good shift. Maybe I would have liked to see him play, and Ozil.
"I don’t think we should go up to Manchester City and just try the best we can with a makeshift midfield. The right back, you know what I mean. Why didn’t he put Mustafi at right-back?"
Wright added that he maintains a belief that Arsenal can react positively.
"Yes (they can bounce back), but after losing 3-1 it’s not easy to say that," he said.
"I have confidence in our work and in our way. I know now we need to pick up and have some big help."
